Cats never do anything without reason. These scratching and biting are quite unwelcome. There are two kinds of biting and scratching behaviours in cats and unfortunately both are shown due to human failings.

Also termed as playful fighting, this very form of aggression starts at a very early age. The kittens play among themselves or between other household kittens and learn the art of fighting, stalking, killing the prey, investigating. Cats have a natural instinct of survival n these lessons on predator-prey relations are necessary for the new ones to survive. This playful fighting is usually harmless. It may often look aggressive to us but kittens keep on giving signals to others that it is playful. The often corrects the others if the one takes a wrong move.

Sexual Aggression

Sexual aggression is largely seen among cats even among those who are neutered. The aggression can be easily identified. The aggressor attacks the other cat by biting on the nape of their neck. This kind of aggression can be shown either from a male to a female or from a female to a male cat.

Territorial Aggression

Territorial Aggression can be in between male-male, male-female or female-female cats. They show their aggression by passing urine. This can result in a big battle ending up with a social hierarchy.
Stopping the cats fight is often a headache for the owners. Still there are few ways you can follow to stop the aggressive behaviour of your cat:

1. You can expose her to other animals, people and surroundings. Can generally get aggressive when they do not get proper attention in their childhood. You can provide your cat different toys and spend a little time with them playing.

2. Do not pat the back of your cat or assure them when they show aggressive behaviour towards other cats. They take it as a reward. Try to stop them and make them indulge in some different activity.

3. Leave your cat alone in a room when she starts showing signs of aggression, rubbing their paws or bending their ears down. Leave them alone for a little time. Do not try to interact with your cat at that time.

4. A little medication may also help in curbing the cat's aggressive behaviour towards other cats. You may contact your veterinarian in that case.

Spaying and Neutering Dogs Too Early - A Stark Warning

Spaying and neutering can make for a better and more affectionate family pet. It is a medical fact that spaying and neutering can prolong the life of our pets and may reduce the number of health problems in later life. Females can benefit from spaying by reducing the incidence of uterine, mammary, ovarian cancers and uterine infections such as Pyometria.

Neutering a male reduces the risk of prostate and testicular cancer. They are less likely to develop unwanted behaviour's such as marking, sexual aggression, and mounting, and are less likely to escape, roam, or fight with other dogs.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SPAY A CAT

Some vets recommend that our dogs are spayed or neutered anywhere between 5 to 16 months. In America some are being done at 8 weeks old. Many rescue centres such as Battersea Dogs Home and the RSPCA/ASPCA spay and neuter as a matter of course, whatever the age. My colleagues and I at PAACT The professional Association of Applied Canine Trainers, have some serious reservations about this advice and practice.

There have been many scientific studies on the beneficial outcome of spaying and neutering on a physiological level, but none I can find on a psychological and behavioural level.

As behavioural consultants and obedience trainers, we find that we are treating many more cases where dogs are displaying (paedomorphic) tendencies. That is puppy like behaviours in adult dogs, which we believe could be related to the incidence of early spaying and neutering.

We have also observed that bitches spayed too early may be far more interesting to intact males; unwanted male attention may cause the female to become aggressive and protective of this attention in adulthood.

With regard to neutering, we believe that males should not be castrated until they have been cocking their leg for at least one month, and should be at least 10 to 16 months of age (depending on breed and size), unless there are medical or serious behavioural issues. In females, we believe that they should have at least one season first, though preferably two; then wait approx 3 months before considering spaying.

Many vets and rescue centres will neuter a male dog before they have cocked their leg. It is at this point dogs start to seriously mark territory. Not the half-hearted attempts we see in immature dogs. The immature castrated dog may squat for the remainder of it's life, and may be more interesting to intact males, the dog may also show low attention spans and frustrative puppy like behaviour.

There appears to be a testosterone surge at between 10 and 16 months depending on breed and size, which clearly turns on a dormant, hard-wired program that establishes this cocking behaviour, many hard-wired behaviours are not isolated to just one action, therefore other functions that are not so obvious may be switched on at this time. These may have social implications and behavioural effects that aid in the development of dogs psychological and physical growth. If we switch these off by neutering or spaying too early, we may be denying the opportunity to achieve both mentally and physically our dog's full adult potential.

It has also been observed that young female dogs that show aggressive tendencies towards owners may demonstrate increased aggression after spaying. Spaying removes the production of progesterone, which is a natural calming hormone.

Progesterone receptors are found in brain cells, in nerve sheaths and in bone cells, indicating that progesterone is involved in their function. It also appears to be involved in a range of other biological activities. Therefore spaying before both physical and psychological maturity may have other long-term detrimental effects.

Many dogs that have been neutered early appear to retain far more juvenile characteristics than those neutered when mature. In other words, they retain perpetual puppy like characteristics, whilst this may initially appear endearing, who would really want a dog that shows low concentration levels and frustrated puppy like behaviour for the remainder of its life.

Because early neutering removes sex hormones, this delays maturation of "osteoclasts" resulting in delayed closing of the growth plates of the long leg bones, thereby increasing the risk of numerous orthopaedic disorders such as cruciate ligament disease and possibly bone cancer.

It can also significantly increase the risk of urinary incontinence in bitches. Early neutering also increases risk of urethral sphincter incontinence in males (A. Aaron et al., Vet Rec. 139:542-6, 1996.)

In conclusion, as an organisation we are for spaying and neutering, but at the right time, thereby allowing your dogs to reach full maturity in both body and mind.

What Do You Do With Homeless Cats?

Most cats adopt YOU, not the other way around. They very craftily sneak into your life by appearing on your doorstep with a pitiful look in their eye, which you assume to be 'hunger'. Being the kind person you are, you offer some tuna to the hungry kitty. That is, unless you are already feeding a cat or cats. In which case, you offer cat food. The timid cat hungrily accepts your offer. You feel better for having fed a helpless animal. You think you may never see the poor creature again, and...it was so cute!

If you are a seasoned 'cat person', you know the 'cute' little cat will be back tomorrow. At this point, you hope the 'cute' little cat won't bring a litter of kittens or, Heaven forbid, be pregnant. You might as well go to the grocery store and buy cat food, you've been tagged.

Dry cat food is easier and less messy for leaving outside. Don't forget to also leave a water bowl. You have now agreed to adoption. The law, in some cities or states, says "if you feed a feral cat, you are then responsible for its care and its actions" (such as pooping in your neighbor's flower bed). Most of us don't take that seriously enough to worry about it. The biggest problem most of us experience is that if you feed one feral cat, you may find you are feeding three or six or more.

If you decide to keep the cat and claim it as yours, you need to gain its trust in order to transport it to the veterinarian for a checkup and necessary vaccinations. Then, arrange for spaying or neutering. Buy it a cat-safe breakaway collar that won't get caught on a fence to strangle it. Put at least a name tag on the collar, with your telephone number. If you don't want to pay for a name tag, put the rabies tag on the collar, which has the veterinarians telephone number. The vet can identify your cat by the vaccination number. Now, you are a cat parent and this precious creature has a good home.

If you decide not to take responsibility for the cat, this leads to more serious questions. Can you afford to feed a neighborhood full of feral cats? Can you afford to have them spayed or neutered to keep a colony from growing? Can you afford to, at the very least, give them rabies shots? It really does become your responsibility to keep from adding to the problem.

The best solution I have seen is the TSNR (Trap/Spay/Neuter/Release) programs adopted by some Humane Societies, SPCA's and even some city governments. The program usually loans you a trap, picks the cat up after you trap it, takes it to their veterinarian for spaying or neutering and then returns it to your neighborhood. Then, you can continue to feed the cat without contributing to a growing colony of feral cats. It does, of course, require time to take care of a large colony but it can and is being done all over the country.

For many years stories of cats with strange abilities to foretell natural disaster or weather changes have abounded. Most reports concern cats showing strange behaviors before storms, volcano eruptions, earthquake or even before less natural phenomena such as air raids. This is also done in China and in 1975, acting on the behavior of cats and other animals, Haicheng was evacuated twenty-four hours before a huge earthquake devastated the area. No doubt the cats had already taken to the hills. And, let's face it, if you live in a region likely to suffer from quakes, all forewarnings are greatly received.

There are several theories as to how cats seem to be able to predict these happenings. During rainstorms, enormous amounts of electricity are discharged into the clouds and create electromagnetic waves that spread through the atmosphere for hundreds of miles. The air becomes charged with positive ions which thought to influence the concentration of certain chemicals in the brain. As a result some people suffer headache before thunder. The cats may be many times sensitive to these ions, and the changes within its brain cause its mood and behavior to alter dramatically. Cats do appear to have remarkable navigational powers, perhaps thanks to an in-built magnetic sensitivity which gives them the same homing ability as is found in pigeons. They also have an amazingly accurate 'internal clock' and will welcome the kids home from school at the same time each day or wait by the wait by the food bowl at the right hour every evening.

Stranger still are tales of cats which have left home to find their owners at great distances away, in places that they have never been to before. One such story is of a cat whose owners were due to more to a new house 200 miles away. On the day of the move the cat somehow got left behind, but it turned up later at the new house! How these cats can even begin to figure out the right direction to take, let alone pinpoint the location of a house so very far away is a complete mystery. But this is by no means a unique story. There are sufficient reports of similar strange happenings to make us want to find out more about just how these cats are able to do it.

Bringing home a new pet is always a stressful time - both for the owner and the animal. A new addition to the family will feel lost, bewildered, and wondering where that big furry milk-machine disappeared to.

As a new owner, you may worry that your pet won't settle into family life, or perhaps you already have other animals and are concerned how they will react to the intruder. You also have the added worry of buying suitable food and bedding, deciding where the toilet will be, how your pet will be exercised - more of a problem for dogs than cats - and a myriad other matters to resolve.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SPAY A CAT

One issue that doesn't immediately leap out at you is that of insurance. Only 15% of dog owners and 7% of cat owners have their pets insured. There is no good reason for this. Pet insurance is relatively cheap compared to the costly vet bill you could face if you don't get your animal insured.

Claiming on pet insurance mirrors the way human beings use the NHS. For the first seven or eight years, most insurers will have relatively minor claims experience from pet owners. Usually, this changes in the next few years.

So just because you have a lovely two-year-old dog that never seems to get ill, don't kid yourself: in another seven or eight years you'll be spending hours at a time at the vet's - and potentially paying through the nose.

And taking a pet to see a vet can be as costly as having an operation yourself:

o A hip replacement for a dog can cost up to £3,000

o Care for a cat badly hurt in a car accident can cost £1,500 or more

o Bowel surgery and subsequent hospital care for a dog that has eaten a sharp object can cost up to £2,500

o If your dog falls down a rabbit hole while out on a walk and fractures her leg, for example, treatments can be as high as £1,500.

o And if your pet develops any on-going health problems, such as diabetes or cancer, treatment costs can run into thousands.

Insurance can help out greatly with this. You will be required to pay an excess, the amount of which you can normally set yourself - the standard minimum is £50 - and your insurer will pay out costs over and above that.

Lifetime cover is best for pets like dogs, cats and reptiles, but check your policy. Some will only cover your pet for conditions developed after the policy was taken out. Others will only cover a particular illness for up to a year, then exclude it from the policy once that year is up.

Some policies have an option to pay up to a fixed amount, such as £4,000, per year which will cover all conditions. However, if your diabetic cat suddenly develops arthritis, the upper limit on your policy may not cover all your new costs. An alternative is to have a fixed cost per condition, but this is only done on an annual basis - no good for lifetime conditions.

By far the best type of pet insurance is lifetime cover with a fixed amount per condition, per year. This will guarantee your pet is insured no matter what illness they contract or how long-term the treatment is.

Once you've settled on the type of cover, there are a few more things to bear in mind:

Some companies will offer a multi-pet discount for all the animals in your household If you are a dog owner, consider public liability cover - if your dog attacks someone the insurance will cover any compensation or medical bills. Decide how you want to pay for your insurance. A one-off annual fee can be handy for getting the cost out of the way, but you may find it easier to pay monthly - ask about interest-free direct debits. Check how much your premium will increase if you make a claim. It's no good having all-singing, all-dancing pet insurance if you're too scared to claim on it!

Finally, if you've decided on lifetime cover, make sure it does mean lifetime. Dogs and cats can live as long as 15 to 20 years, so ensure your 'lifetime cover' isn't just for 10 years.

Now, let's clarify some myths:

When a male dog is after a fertile female, breeding is the only thing on his mind. He will do anything that he can think of to get to her: scaling fences, breaking down doors, mating through fences, digging, etc. Besides risking getting sued for any damage, another thing to consider is that you are as responsible as the owner of the female for any puppies that are born.

What happens if your female dog is not spayed?

-First, you can count on having her locked up twice a year to keep her away from all those dogs that I mentioned before.

-Her risk of mammary cancer doubles, although it doubles from almost nothing to very low with only one heat, it climbs quickly thereafter till after 5 heats as it starts to approach 50%. Be very careful that you don't allow a mating when she gets her first heat because this can be life threatening. It is very important to spay her before the first heat.

-A brother and sister from the same litter can create their own litters by the age of five months. It is not a good idea to allow this to happen.

-Male dogs can sometimes be quite aggressive to a female in season. 

-Your house will be a mess, and her behavior will drive you crazy.

After reading all this, you need to ask yourself, "is it really worth it?"

Frankly, in the 99.99% of cases, it is not.

Don't wait until your dog starts getting sexual drives before you neuter him. In many cases, once the dog starts the misbehavior associated with attempting to breed, that behavior can stay even after the neutering has taken place.

Do yourself, your family, your neighbors and your beloved dogs a favor by getting them spayed and neutered. Why spay and neuter your dogs?

All too often I hear of people who are giving up their beloved family pet because their landlord enacted a new no-pets policy, or because they are moving into a rental property that has a no-pets policy. Less frequently, I also hear of landlords who will allow cats but require that they be declawed.

Before you accept a rental policy that costs your family, disrupts your life and harms your pet, there are a few steps you should take.

Did you know that, as a tenant, you have certain rights? Each area will have its own set of rules and bylaws for tenants and landlords, but don't just assume that your landlord is following these rules. Make sure you know what your rights are regarding your tenancy and pets before you are forced into doing anything.

For example, did you know that in Ontario your landlord cannot evict you or force you to get rid of your pet unless they are dangerous, causing excess noise, damage to the unit or allergy problems? Even if you signed a lease with a no-pets agreement, they cannot evict you. No-pets clauses are considered invalid under the law and the only way you can be evicted for having a pet is if the Landloard and Tenant Board of Ontario determines that the pet meets one of the above criteria. Let them know that you will provide a clean litter box and appropriate surfaces for your cat to scratch. Let them know that your cats are spayed/neutered. Explain spaying/neutering eliminates the undesirable cat behaviours that they may be concerned about, such as yowling, territory marking with urine & feces, fighting, and attracting stray cats to the area. Let them know that these behaviours are typical of intact animals and that yours have been fixed. Assure them that your cat will be in a carrier or on a leash any time they are in a public area. Animals running at large can be dangerous and a nuisance. Reassure them that your cat will be kept under control at all times. Explain what declawing is and that it often results in other undesirable behaviour. Many people do not understand what declawing is and have no idea that it may result in other even more undesirable behaviour, like peeing outside the litterbox. It may be time to consider moving to a more pet-friendly home or if that is not feasible, you may need to re-home your pets. I do not consider declawing your cat to be an acceptable compromise.

Ideally you'll be able to find a new place that allows pets in its rental agreement. If not, properties that are owned by individuals may provide more flexibility than large rental companies on pet policies - at the very least you may find it easier to get access to someone who has the power to make that decision.

If moving is not an option and you must re-home your pets, do everything in your power to find a new home yourself, rather than dropping your cat off at a shelter. All shelters have an abundance of cats and too few adopters, and your cat runs the risk of being in a cage for an extended period of time or being euthanized if they are not adopted quickly. Use all the resources at your disposal - friends and family, community billboards, Freecycle (if your local list allows) and Craigslist. You'll feel much better knowing that your cat is going to a home instead of a cage and you will have a say in what type of home your cat goes to.
