Comparing Cat Hair Shedding in Different Cat Breeds

Cat hair is a fact of life, but different cat breeds shed at different rates. If you've been considering a cat as a pet, but have been put off by shedding, a look at different cat breeds may change your point of view.

Although no animal with fur can be completely free of shedding, some cat breeds are known to shed more (or less) than others. Hair length and type can also be a factor. Different cat breeds have hair that is less noticeable when draped over your furniture.

Breeds Known For Shedding

Although cat hair shedding varies by breed and even from cat to cat, it is generally more noticeable in longer-haired breeds.

Somali. With its big ears, full coat and bushy tail, the Somali could be mistaken for a fox. This longhaired breed will leave obvious signs of its passing, but it is a small price to pay to live with such a beautiful animal.

Maine Coon. Long admired for its mouse catching abilities, the Maine Coon breed has a fluffy, multi-colored coat. Although shedding can be a problem, the Maine Coon is a hardy breed of cat and its long cat hair makes it a perfect "outdoor" cat.

Persian. This famous and friendly breed of cat is a popular choice among pet owners. The long hair of Persian cats can be a maintenance issue, however. Regular brushing is required to keep these cats from getting matted coats.

Low-Shed Cat Breeds

Devon Rex. This active, curious breed is relatively new, having been bred only since 1959. The Devon Rex has a short, wiry coat that makes shed hair unobtrusive. Reports of Devon Rex cats being "non-shedding" or "hypo-allergenic" have proven to be false, although these cats do leave less cat hair than other varieties.

Cornish Rex. With a distinctive appearance that resembles ancient Egyptian paintings, the Cornish Rex is a unique breed of cat. The Cornish Rex has a soft, extremely short coat. The minimal shedding of this breed tends to blend into the background due to the short, fine hairs.

Sphynx. As close to shed-free as you can come, the Sphynx breed of cat is almost completely hairless except for a thin layer of downy fur. Compared to a peach and to suede, the soft skin of the Sphynx leaves little or no trace behind.
