the damage was substantial enough to declare a complete loss.

Infections from cat bites spread quickly, especially when the bite wound is on the hand. Within hours redness, swelling, pain, and warmth may develop at the site of the wound. A red streak may extend upwards as inflammation spreads along the lymphatic channels and veins that lead away from the wound. If these symptoms occur, call your doctor right away. He may decide to offer you an antibiotic over the phone, or more likely will want to see you. Either way, you will need an antibiotic. Penicillin or amoxicillin left over from a sore throat or ear infection is not likely to be effective. If you decide to wait a few days and see how things develop, you're likely to end up in the hospital on intravenous antibiotics.

Cats carry other diseases as well. Cat scratch disease is caused by Bartonella henselae. Infection with this organism produces a crusted, red bump or pustule at the site of the cat scratch or bite within 3 to 10 days of exposure. Swollen glands develop within the next 2 weeks. Bites on the arm or hand produce swollen glands in the armpits, whereas those on the lower extremities cause lymph nodes in the groin to swell. Along with the swollen glands comes fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, and headache. In general, no antibiotics are needed for this infection, which takes 2 to 5 months to resolve.

Contracting rabies from an unvaccinated cat is a possibility. In the US, the highest incidence of cat rabies is clustered in the lower New England states. If your own cat bites you but has been vaccinated, the risk is practically nonexistent. If a ferrel cat bites you, you should contact your doctor or health department right away to see if you are a candidate for rabies immunization. If you wait until you have symptoms, you'll be dead soon. Don't skimp on immunizing your pet - spending now could save you ,000 or more in the long run.

You have to keep her indoors and check on where she is and what she is doing. If she manages to get out and find a male cat, chances are that you are going to be a grandparent to their kittens.

Feline UTI (urinary tract infection) is a disease that many cats have. It's mostly found in neutered male cats. Since it is a fatal but highly treatable disease, you will want to know the signs so that you can treat it early. UTI shows up very quickly, one day your cat is fine, and the next he is blocked by crystals or bladder stones. Toxins will build up in the cat's body, as the kidneys are no longer filtering bad things out of the cat's system. If your cat isn't treated, it can die within 24 hours. Recognizing the signs and symptoms is easy. Some of the first symptoms are urinating outside of the litter box, straining to urinate, blood in the urine, excessive licking of the genitals, and crying in the litter box.

Some may just think that their cat has developed bad cat behaviors. This is because they may be urinating on the floor away from the litter box. UTI is usually treated by a vet. At the vet they will use a catheter to push the blockage out, or back into the bladder where it will dissolve. This is a painful operation for the cat. Because of the pain, anesthetic is given to the cat. Usually, the cat will be kept at the vets for a few days with a catheter attached to them to make sure that the cat doesn't have the blockage come back, or if you are on a budget, you can leave right after the operation is complete. These vet visits may cost up to around ,000, so you might want to treat at home.

For this, I recommend apple cider vinegar. I used ACV along with Gimborn Uri soothe for urinary tract health. After about five days of apple cider vinegar and Uri soothe treatment, Wessie is now urinating normally. It was low-cost, around .08, while a visit to the vets can cost over a thousand dollars.

If you are trying to treat at home, here are some tips.

When your cat has UTI, regularly scoop his box so that you can see any new urine that he has left. Make sure that the cat keeps hydrated, but that he doesn't have too much water, as he will then be in extreme discomfort if he is unable to release the pressure. Feed your cat his normal amount of wet food with a capful of ACV mixed in. If your cat usually has dry, switch to wet. You might want to find a urinary tract supplement like we did.

How To Tame A Wild Cat

I didn't grow up with pets, so when I came of age, it was one of my first priorities to get a dog.

And I've adopted lots of them from rescue organizations, mostly Dobermans and Bearded Collies, one of which I have now.

While I've enjoyed playing with cats, and especially talking with them and having them respond, I never had one I could call my own, until now.

Cleopa was born a feral, or wild cat, nearby my urban home. Somewhere, nestled between yards and parking lots, she arrived on the scene with at least two sisters and a couple of brothers.

About six months ago, I started leaving some food out for these teeny creatures, and I took a liking to Cleopa, who is snow white with beautiful black and red markings, mostly on her head and tail.

I resolved to adopt her, to tame her, and here's how I did it.

(1) I talked to her, every chance I got. Having a door that opens out onto a front terrace made this fairly easy to do. Before too long, she spoke back.

(2) I tried to pet her, but she bit me. Next, I decided to hand-feed her some food, which she was wary of, but couldn't resist.

(3) Petting her back while feeding her came next.

(4) Next, I placed a bowl of food inside my door, moving it closer and closer to the kitchen with subsequent feedings. Finally, it came to rest next to the stove, where I feed her now.

(5) Before long, she allowed me to pet her without food, and then she jumped on my lap for petting, and finally she meowed to get in to be petted, without any promise of food.

Now, she's like a regular house cat, and she doesn't want very much to go out.

What happened to her brothers and sisters? The boys split long ago, but the sisters, Marquesa and Nochka are still hanging around, and I feed them outdoors.

For some reason, they resisted my efforts to civilize them!

The View From Inside a Feral Cat TNR Program

My Houston neighborhood has been invaded by feral cats. At least twenty-five have made their home at a foreclosed house that backs up to mine, and now that it is mating season there will soon be more if nothing is done. As defined by Alley Cat Allies, a feral cat is: "A cat who has lived his whole life with little or no human contact and is not socialized, or a stray cat who was lost or abandoned and has lived away from human contact long enough to revert to a wild state. Feral cats avoid human contact and cannot be touched by strangers." These cats do serve a purpose in helping to control rodent populations, and the current thinking among animal welfare groups is that a program encompassing humane trapping, sterilization and return to their neighborhoods is best for both cats and humans to continue to co-exist peacefully.

Several neighbors and I have been feeding our little colony for a number of months, and I have grown fond of the independent little critters, all of whom have their own distinct personalities. Some are braver and more approachable than others, and several will come within inches of me when it is dinner time, sometimes even batting at my hands if I am not dishing out the food quickly enough. All, however, run away if I try to touch them, and many will only come out of the shadows once I have packed up the food and left the porch where they hang out. One brave little white Siamese mix was more friendly than the rest, and would let me pet him and pick him up; I was quickly able to crate him and take him to a local shelter where he went into a foster home for some socialization before being put up for adoption. While I am sure that the rest of the cats would be very happy to continue their current arrangement, there are several problems from the human side. First, the foreclosed house will shortly be taken over by the mortgage company and I am sure they will not appreciate a number of kitties running around the property. Second, the longer the colony exists without intervention, the more cats there will be. Finally, many neighbors are not happy with their presence due to spraying, screaming and mating behaviors, and several have begun to threaten to trap and kill them.

After researching various resources to learn more about feral cats, I have become the neighborhood proponent of a Trap/Neuter (or Spay)/Return (TNR) program. Basically, the cats are caught using live traps, taken for spay/neuter surgery as well as vaccinations, parasite control and ear tipping (where the top of the left ear is cut off so that these cats can quickly be identified as already sterilized and part of a managed colony), then returned to their original location. Caretakers agree to continue to provide food, water, shelter and medical care when needed. This type of program can be successful in controlling local populations and allows the cats to live safer, healthier and longer lives. The cats can then continue their neighborhood jobs of controlling rodent populations, and their average life span increases from a mere two years to about ten.

Here in Houston, the only group that currently helps people manage feral cat colonies is called the Feral Cat Assistance Program (FCAP). It is an organization that works on limited grants and funding, and their resources are stretched thin. Through my ongoing work with the local shelter from which FCAP is an offshoot, I was able to get our little colony on the list for their assistance. Even so, it has been four months of waiting for spay/neuter surgery appointments to open. Finally, this past week, they were able to secure ten surgery spots and seven live traps for our little group. Neighbors added another two traps to the effort.

Then, the hard work began. With limited help, and after asking a lot of questions of those who have done this before, I carted nine traps over to the abandoned house on a Tuesday evening. I baited them with smelly food like human tuna and sardines (a very messy job) and then set them in various secluded spots around the yard and porch so that they could not see each other getting caught. Four cats had entered the traps before I finished setting the remaining five. Other cats were more wary, so I took the four trapped felines back to my house to spend the night in a heated room off my garage, waited an hour, and went back to check the traps again. In the first hour, one more cat was trapped. Several of the cats had figured out how to get the food without springing the trap, so I re-baited and moved the four remaining traps. Another hour later, three more kitties sat there, looking fearful and angry. They, too, spent the night in a comfortable room. The unoccupied trap was sprung with no cat inside, so I decided that eight was enough for the first night.

Early the next morning, I loaded them all in my car and off we went on a thirty minute drive to the new Spay Houston low cost clinic. Even though I was a little late getting there due to rush hour traffic, they took them all in and told me to return the next morning at 7:00 AM to collect them. Physically, I was exhausted and sore; who would have thought that setting and carrying nine unhappy cats in traps could cause so much muscle pain in legs, arms, shoulders and back? And, I am sure they were not feeling any better about life.

I collected them the following morning, furry little balls huddled in corners of their cages, some hissing, some meowing and some just sitting and watching. I was instructed to keep them confined for an additional twenty-four to forty-eight hours if possible, to make sure they were eating and there was no bleeding. In all, there were four males and four females, two of which were already pregnant. Most were fairly young. Back we went to the heated room off the garage, where I set them all down on a plastic tarp covered with newspaper, and covered the traps with a sheet. I provided them with food and water and left them to recuperate.

On the second morning after their surgery, all had eaten at least something and all seemed responsive and alert. There was no sign of bleeding and I am sure they were uncomfortable sitting in their little traps. One smaller cat had somehow pulled one of the sheet covers into his trap and balled himself up in it, and looked a little surprised to have it pulled away from him. One by one I took them out to the yard near the fence backing up to their "residence" and opened the traps. All looked relieved to be out in the fresh air, and all took off like lightning towards familiar territory once the doors were opened.

We will try again next week to capture additional members of the colony and go through the same process. Little by little, we hope to get most, if not all, sterilized and vaccinated, so that the colony remains at a manageable size. Yes, you read that right. My cat things she's a dog. At least that's what we think she thinks. It's really hard to read a cat's mind.

When my father-in-law decided to sell his huge home and move into a condo, my husband and I inherited his cat. We liked Pi, and had been intending to get another cat ever since our last one had a stroke, so acquiring Pi wasn't a problem. Having her acquire us, I guess, is more appropriate.

There were some problems, though. Pi was used to being both an indoor and outdoor cat. She spent her first five years in a neighborhood with huge homes, huge pie-shaped lots on a cul-de-sac. She was able to roam without anyone worrying that she was near traffic. She was able to chase squirrels and birds at her leisure. And she was quite content just checking in with her people once in a while for some food and petting.

When Pi moved in with us, things were different. We lived on a cul-de-sac also, but the lots were small and ours was not fenced. There were two ways in and out of our neighborhood, and even though the speed limit was 25, cars sped down the street going 50 sometimes. We really didn't think that Pi would survive being an outdoor cat here, so we kept her indoors.

Perhaps she would have been fine with that. She didn't mind using a litter box, after all. And she could sit in our kitchen's bay window and watch the world. But day after day, she watched as our son and his girlfriend walked their dog outside in view of that bay window. The more she saw the dog going out, the more she wanted more freedom as well. Soon, she started dashing for the front door every time it opened. And just as we had imagined, she headed for the busy neighborhood street every time she did escape.

We bought a collar and leash for Pi, but her first reaction was, "Are you crazy? I'm a cat!" Soon, she realized that in order for her to spend time outside, she would have to be tethered.

On day one, she allowed me to put on the leash and take her outside. She promptly lay on the ground and refused to move. On day two, she ventured a few feet, then planted herself in the yard. And so it went. Now, many months later, she has grown accustomed to having a human trail behind her on a leash. She walks leisurely in the yard and on the sidewalk, trying to pretend that she is alone.

But Pi must have been observing more than just how a dog gets to walk on a leash. She must have observed other "dog benefits" and has embraced some of them as her own.

Pi now likes to eat any kind of meat, but especially hot dogs. She has also decided that milk and cream are not at all interesting. She wants to lick any human food plate, whether it once contained veggies, pasta or meat products. But not fish. Pi has decided that tuna and other fish is totally gross. She sits by the front door and meows quietly until one of her humans understands that she wants to walk.

Fortunately, she still does act like a cat. Often she meows noisily, almost sounding as if she's screaming my name. "Meooooooooowlyn." And when I hold her in my lap, telling her that I really don't understand what she wants, she jumps down quickly, glancing at me with over her shoulder with disdain.

I guess she's still a cat after all.

Can Cat Fleas Bite Humans?

Yes it is very possible for a human to get bitten and if a flea is going to bite you it is usually the cat flea (Ctenocephalides Felis) that does it, at least that is the case in the United States.

A nip from one of these little parasites can be unpleasantly irritating and cause discomfort for a couple of days. Some people however are allergic to the saliva of the flea and their discomfort can be more severe. A bite from Ctenocephalides Felis can prove very itchy and scratching the itch can cause secondary infections. Children seem to be affected more acutely than adults.

More seriously, Murine Typhus is a possible outcome albeit extremely rarely. Again it is possible to contract tapeworm through inadvertently swallowing a cat flea. However, although this is a fairly common outcome of cats swallowing the parasite, it is rare for humans.

Ctenocephalides Felis is a tiny wingless creature. Being wingless it obviously can't fly, but it does have very powerful hind legs that enable it to leap up to about eighteen inches. Therefore the most usual place to be bitten by one of these creatures is the ankles and lower legs, although bites elsewhere on the body, such as the elbows, waist and armpits, are not uncommon.

It is quite possible for you to be bitten by a cat flea and not even feel it. What you almost certainly will notice is the itching coming from a tiny reddish, or pink, bump. Give in to the temptation to scratch that itchy bump and you can cause it to bleed and you risk infection.

What can you do?

If you have multiple cat flea bites, or are seriously affected or there is an infection, then get treatment from your doctor.

In milder cases. To reduce the chance of infection wash the area with an antiseptic soap.

Resist the temptation to scratch, use calamine lotion or an anesthetic cream to ease the itching.

An ice pack will help reduce any swelling.

Any human can be bitten by cat fleas, but if you share your home with a feline your chances are much greater. If you should suffer an attack from Ctenocephalides Felis it is a pretty good indication that your cat has fleas. If you don't want you and your pet to keep getting bites, then you need to do two things. Get your feline free of fleas and rid your cat's environment, your home, of the creatures too.

If you don't get rid of the parasites from your home then they will keep on infesting your cat and doubtless keep biting you.

- Too much litter. Cats prefer one to two inches of litter

- Types of cat litter used. Cats prefer soft texture litter that is kind to their soft paws.

- Location of litter box. Like people, cats develop preferences for where they like to eliminate and may avoid locations they don't like. This means they might avoid their kitty box if it's in a location they dislike.

A cat in heat often displays strange behavior, with distinct howls and pained writhing so be alert to these signs. Spaying or 'ovariohysterectomy', surgically removing the uterus and ovaries, is performed under general anesthesia. The incision in the cat's abdomen is closed up with stitches often needing removal after 10 days. As with toms, de-sexed queens are less likely to develop certain diseases; the chances of having malignant breast cancer or 'pyometra' (uterine infection) are greatly reduced.

Although neutering and spaying are irreversible procedures it is worth reminding that tens of thousands of unwanted cats are put to death each year in the United States alone. Considering this alarming statistic it may be a wise idea to seriously consider having your beloved pet neutered. The procedures are safe, affordable and if any post operative complaints occur it is a simple matter of returning to the Vet for further advice.

Be responsible and have your cat de-sexed and be content in knowing that none of your beloved companion's positive personality traits will be affected.

As a response, life insurance companies about 20 years ago began developing Universal Life and Variable Universal Life insurance. These polices are really Term Life with a tax-free investment account bundled together with them; this account is partly customized by the policy holder. Variable Universal policies allow for greater investment returns but, hence, exposure to greater risk, including possible losses; they also allow extra money to be paid into them with premium payments to increase their cash value. These policies' premiums are usually in between Term and Whole Life for the same amount of coverage for the same person.

As a rule of thumb, when you apply for life insurance you want to be covered for 8 to 10 times your annual salary. (There may also be other considerations of what amount you want if you are in a business situation or if you are using life insurance for a specialized need such as mortgage payoff in case of untimely death). Spaying or neutering, although done daily in a veterinarians office, may seem like a scary surgery to a new dog owner. This procedure is a quick, safe, efficient and a very necessary surgery that will normally take under 25-35 minutes. This is done completely under anesthetic so the dog has absolutely no recollection of the surgery and will go home the same day.

Either dissolvable or regular stitches will be used to suture the surgical site and a cone or Elizabethan Collar (E-Collar) will be issued so the dog does not try to lick or tend to the site. There is no pain medication to go home and recovery is usually between 14-21 days. Suture removal will be done between the 7-14 day mark after the surgery, and from then onwards, the dog will be at no risk of becoming impregnated or will not be able to reproduce.
